Signs of Storm Damage to Look For
You don't need to get on your roof to spot most storm damage. Here's what to check from the ground and inside your home.
Missing or displaced shingles
Even a few missing shingles expose your roof deck to water intrusion. Wind typically removes shingles in groups from ridge or rake edges first.
Granule loss on asphalt shingles
Check your gutters — if they're full of dark granules after a storm, your shingles have taken hail impact. Granule loss accelerates shingle deterioration dramatically.
Dented or damaged gutters
Hail that dents aluminum gutters almost certainly damaged your shingles too. Dents in gutters or downspouts are a visible indicator that requires an inspection.
Chimney or flashing damage
Hail can crack chimney caps, damage mortar, and displace step flashing. These are common entry points for water after a storm.
Attic water stains
After any major storm, check your attic with a flashlight. Fresh brown staining on sheathing or rafters indicates active or recent water intrusion.
Soffit and fascia damage
Soft aluminum soffit panels show hail impact visibly. Damaged soffit can also indicate wind-driven rain has entered your attic space.
Cracked or broken skylights
Large hail can crack skylight domes, frames, and glazing. Even hairline cracks will leak — inspect skylights after any hail event over 1.5".
Dents on AC unit or other soft metals
Check your air conditioner fins and any exposed copper or aluminum on the exterior. If these are dented, your roof took significant hail impact.
Important: Many storm damage indicators are not visible from the ground. Granule loss, impact cracking, and compromised flashing typically require a trained inspector on the roof. Don't rely on a visual check alone — a free professional inspection is the only way to know for certain.
How the Insurance Claim Process Works
We handle the complicated parts. Here's the step-by-step process when you call Summit after storm damage.
Call Summit — Free Inspection
We come to your property within 24–48 hours (priority for active damage). Our inspector uses a drone for the aerial overview and goes up on the roof for a physical inspection. You receive a full photo report of every damage item we document.
We Write Your Damage Report
Our damage documentation is designed to be used as an insurance document. We note shingle type, square footage of damage, impact measurements, and a scope of repairs. This report is what separates approved claims from denied ones.
You File Your Claim
Contact your insurance company and file the claim. You'll be assigned a claim number and an adjuster. Call us with that information — we handle everything from here.
We Meet Your Adjuster On-Site
Our insurance specialist meets your adjuster at your property. We walk the roof together and present our damage documentation. We know the language adjusters use, we know what they look for, and we know what they sometimes underestimate.
Claim Approved — We Schedule Installation
Once your claim is approved, we review the scope of loss with you. If the adjuster missed items, we can file a supplement. Once the scope is final, we schedule your installation — most jobs begin within 2 weeks of approval.
